Preschool Lead Teacher Job Description

 

Position Summary

The Lead Teacher is responsible for implementing best practice child care and child supervision strategies as well as in developing and implementing a stimulating program and curriculum that promotes the social, emotional, and physical development of each child enrolled in our program. The development of these activities within the program and/or curriculum must align with the New York State Early Learning Guidelines (ELG), the New York State Prekindergarten Foundation for the Common Core (PKFCC), and/or the New York State Common Core State Standards (CCSS) for English Language Arts and Mathematics.

 

Responsibilities and Duties

  • Assist in the supervision of children to maintain the overall health, safety, and well-being of each child in care.

  • Discuss assigned duties with classroom teachers in order to coordinate instructional efforts.

  • Maintains a well-organized, clean, sanitary, safe, and attractive classroom environment conducive to the optimal development of children. This includes cleaning surfaces, equipment, toys, and removing garbage.

  • Serve and feed children approved or provided meals. Must be conscious of food allergies and restrictions.

  • Change children’s diapers, toilet train, and/or assist each child with going to the bathroom as needed.

  • Maintain records on each child’s attendance, progress, and development for the purpose of planning and compliance with the ELG, PKFCC, or CCSS.

  • Participate in mandatory staff meetings, training, center activities, and staff development.

  • Conduct appropriate developmental screenings and formal assessments for each child as assigned.

  • Review each individual child’s developmental progress and create individual plans for improvement.

  • Develop a positive relationship with each child and promote the development of self-esteem and self-discipline.

  • Establish a positive professional relationship and open line of appropriate communication with each child’s family and share information about the child’s day at the center.

  • Plan and implement the daily program of activities based on principles of child development and in accordance with the class’ curriculum, standards/goals, and State regulations.

  • Assist children individually or in small groups in order to help them master assignments and reinforce learning concepts presented by curriculum, program administration, and Center Director.

  • Enforce and abide by all company policies, regulations, administration instructions, and rules governing students.

  • Organize and label materials.

  • Provide appropriate additional assistance and/or lesson differentiation to students with special needs.

  • Update each child’s daily report using the center’s daily reporting system or logs.

  • Complete incident reports to notify children’s families of incidents, injuries, or illnesses that occur at the center.

  • Undergo ongoing training as assigned or approved by administration and/or the center Director.

  • Must be able to lift up to 25-30 pound children and objects.

  • Must be able to walk, squat/kneel, sit on floor, see, hear, speak with children to ensure children’s health and safety.

  • Train and supervise assistant teachers, floaters, volunteers, and others assisting in the classroom.

 

Qualifications

  • Minimum 9+ college credits in Early Childhood, Child Development, or a related field with plan of study required.

  • Preschool Child Development Associate (CDA) or Associates degree in Early Childhood or Child Development preferred.

  • Minimum one year of child care experience preferred.

  • Must demonstrate experience and interest in working with young children, parents, and with a team of educators.

  • Must have effective, appropriate, and strong communication skills (orally and written).

  • Must be able to speak, read, and write fluently in English. Bilingual is a plus.

Physical Requirements

The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is required to speak and understand basic English. This position is very active and requires sitting, standing, walking, running, bending, kneeling, stooping, crouching, crawling, and climbing all day. The employee must frequently lift and/or move up to 10 lbs. and occasionally lift and/or move up to 25 lbs. The employee must be able to see and hear children at all times for the safety of children and co-workers.

Pay rate: $17.00 - $25.00 per hour
